Full of beautiful scenery, the quiet coastal region of Yarmouth and Acadian Shores feature naturally inspiring places full of culture and history. Driving through this area you’ll come across picturesque fishing villages, beautiful churches, local museums and galleries—all a glimpse into the Acadian culture which presides here.
 
Nova Scotia - Acadian shores, Forchu LighthouseBring your camera and stop at the tea house at the Cape Forchu Lightstation (also known as the Yarmouth Lightstation). Take a walk down to the wharf in John’s Cove and watch lobster fisherman pull in their catch. In Yarmouth catch a live theatre performance at Th’YARC, or browse through the art gallery there. Enjoy the scenery as you sip a warm beverage at a waterfront café. Tour through the town and check out the local art galleries and shops. South of Yarmouth you’ll find the Argyle Township Courthouse, the oldest courthouse in Canada. In Saulnierville be sure to stop at the Eglise Sacre-Coeur, a gorgeous historic wooden church from the 1800’s—bilingual guides are available to share its history with you during the summer.
 
Nova Scotia - Acadian shores, Vineyard ValleyThe pivotal event in the Yarmouth and Acadian Shores region is the Acadien de Clare Festival, the oldest Acadian festival. This event is fun for the whole family and feautures live music and cultural events. Visit Le Village Historique Acadien and Le Musée Acadien to explore the interesting history of the Acadians. Relax in the sanctuary of one of Acadia’s towering churches. Try some fine Acadian wine at the beautiful Gaspereau Vineyards. Be sure to try Rappie Pie, a traditional savoury Acadian meal, while you’re here as well. Spend a day on the golf course at the 18-hole Yarmouth Links, featuring undulating fairways, a driving range, power cart rentals and a licensed snack bar. West Pubnico Golf & Country Club is also close by. Take a few days and stay at one of the unique cottages and hotels or Bed and Breakfasts that abound; you'll be glad you did!
 

Nova Scotia - Acadian shores

The beaches around Yarmouth and the Acadian shores are lovely. Pack a picnic and head to Mavillette Beach Provincial Park or Ellenwood Lake Provincial Park. Dig your toes into the sand and watch the world go by. Take a break from driving and trek the five-kilometer-long interpretive trail in Joseph and Marie Dugas Municipal Park, which is also home to the Festival Joseph et Marie Dugas in July featuring a flea market, fresh seafood and family entertainment. One truly spectacular event in August is the Tuna Tournament. Make sure to register in advance because seats fill fast for this event. Test your strength in a fighting chair in the Sport Tuna Fishing Museum.
 
The Yarmouth and Acadian Shores region is truly unique in Nova Scotia. The area offers a lot of great cultural experiences and a break from bustle of other parts of the province. There are many great things here to do with the whole family and a ton of great photo opportunities!
